HOW MANY BIKES WILL BE ON THE RIDE TO THE WALL- SOUTHERN STYLE? |
The total number of bikes is limited to 200 for safety reasons. |
HOW OFTEN DO WE STOP FOR FUEL? |
The ride is designed to stop approximately every two hours for fuel and to give riders a chance to stretch their legs and get the kinks out.
Two pickup trucks with ice water and snacks arrive at each gas stop in advance of the ride. The gas crew sets up multiple lines at the pumps and as each bike pulls up the rider is handed the hose. Fill your tank and get out of the way. We can fuel 200 bikes in less than 45 minutes. |
CAN I RIDE A TRIKE? |
Yes, but be aware that like in most group rides, all trikes will be at the end of the group for safety reasons. |
DO I HAVE TO WEAR A HELMET? |
YES! There is only one state in which we will be riding that will allow you to ride without a helmet, that is Florida. However, for the purposes of this ride, you MUST wear a helmet at all times. |
CAN I SHARE A ROOM WITH ANOTHER RIDER? |
You can share the cost of the ride with another rider. All packages are listed with a second pricing for a shared room. By sharing the room, you can significantly reduce the cost of the ride for an individual |
IS THE RIDE AN ESCORTED RIDE? |
Yes. Five members of the Iredell County, North Carolina Sheriff's Office plus an officer from the Wilkesboro, North Carolina Police Department act as the "core escort" officers and ride with the group from Bradenton, Florida to Arlington, Virginia. In addition, units from other law enforcement offices escort the group through their jurisdictions.
Beginning in 2009, there will also be 16 Road Captains spread through the group to assist the escort officers and the riders. Road Captains and other riders with CB radios monitor Channel 1. |
WHAT IF I BREAK DOWN? |
Bruce Rossmeyer's Daytona Harley-Davidson in Daytona Beach donates the use of their 18-wheel semi-trailer to the ride each year. This truck follows the ride and will stop and assist any rider from the group who breaks down or is involved in an accident. Your bike would be loaded on the truck at no cost to you and returned to the ride stop which is closest to your home, either Bradenton, Clermont or Daytona Beach in Florida; Savannah, Georgia, Statesville, North Carolina, or Shenandoah, Virginia. The truck does not have a mechanic, just a driver, so any repairs must be done at one of our stops. |
WHAT KIND OF SPEEDS CAN I EXPECT ON THE HIGHWAY? |
The group rides at the speed limit or that speed which is set by the escorting agency. When leaving a gas stop, the group accdelerates to 65 mph until the rear escort determines the group is up to speed at which time the speed is increased gradually to the speed set by the escort. |
CAN I RIDE WITH THE GROUP AND STAY IN A MOTEL OF MY CHOICE? |
No. All riders must stay with the hotels we have contracted with.
The motel rooms are part of the package price. |
GAS STOPS MUST BE A CIRCUS! |
There has been a problem in the past, but new ideas are going to be implemented in 2009 to reduce the chaos at gas stops. We will not be stopping at smaller gas stations anymore as the ride has gotten to be "too big" for them to handle and there is not enough parking in most instances to handle all the bikes. We will be stopping at "truck stops" and larger stations in the future. We will also have a parking crew which will arrive at a gas stop ahead of the ride and set up a parking pattern in the parking lot to
facilitate an easier exit onto the highway. |
